Philippe Vachier: A Master Cartier of Marseille
Philippe Vachier, born in Marseille, worked as a cartier (card-maker) from 1632 to 1668/75. He established a family tradition of master card-makers that spanned generations. His grandson, Sébastien Vachier, continued the craft in the historic Le Panier district on Rue des Cartiers, likely in the same workshop once owned by Philippe and later passed to his son, Claude Vachier.
This deck not only reflects the rich heritage of the Váchier family but also serves as a vivid reminder of the enduring artistry rooted in the heart of Marseille.
